how
to write teacher cover letters
Teacher cover letters are fun to write because the text can get
personal. You can provide information on what makes you tick as a
teacher.
My
teacher
and education cover letters are specifically designed to showcase
your ability to manage a classroom, develop curriculum, and engage
students. Be sure to review the teacher
resume service for additional information on how I can assist
you with your job search.
Your student teaching experience counts as EXPERIENCE!
Over and over I have clients who say they “only” have student
teaching experience. As if student teaching isn’t a significant
part of their training. Never talk down about your qualifications.
An “apologetic tone” comes off as self-deprecating. Embrace your
experience as a student teacher and write about the give and take of
the process…what you gained and what the students gained.
Write about your motivation.
If the reason you entered the teaching profession is a noble one,
make mention of the reason in your cover letter. The selection
committee is interested in learning that you were drawn to the
classroom because you care about tomorrow’s leaders and not
because you want the summers off.
To quote or not to quote. That is the question.
Most teachers select a quote to include in their letter, resume, and
/ or philosophy statement. Here’s my perspective on the use of
quotes in a teacher cover letter: choose the quote carefully. Make
sure the quote means something to you, and for a bigger bang for
your buck, select a quote from a person you admire. Doing so ensures
that when you are asked about the quote during the interview,
you’ll provide a heartfelt answer.
Write about your classroom management style.
Students want teachers to be fair. They don’t expect a teacher to
roll over and allow students to run amuck in the classroom, but they
want teachers to dole out discipline that “fit’s the crime” so
to speak. They also want a teacher to be consistent and not have
favorites. So if a C student gets disciplined for talking in class,
so should the straight A student. In the teacher cover letter talk
about your style in the classroom and how students respond to it.
Mention the reason you want to work in this school district.
This should be an easy topic to tackle. Before you apply for the
position, research the school district, the culture, and the
community. Integrate what you learned in your teacher cover letter.
