typical phone
interview advice
Phone interviews
are held for two reasons: (1) screening purposes and (2) for a
full fledge interview when the job candidate lives out of state.
For screening
purposes, the call is usually placed by a HR clerk who doesn't have
a say in the hiring decision. That said, the information the clerk
passes along to decision makers determines whether or not you are
invited in for an in person meeting.
Telephone interview
questions asked of you during the screening process aren't hard
hitting. You can expect the following questions:

When
are you available to start employment? |

What
are your salary requirements? |

Why
are you looking for another position? |

Tell
me about yourself. |
Tell
me about your typical work day. |
For a full
interview you can expect telephone interview questions to mimic
"in person interviews, including:

What
is your greatest weaknesses? |

What
is your greatest strength? |

Why
should I hire you? |

What
is your greatest accomplishment? |
Tell
me about a time when you had to placate an upset customer.

How
would you describe your leadership skills? |

interview tips
The drawback of a
telephone interview is that the interviewer can only rely on your
voice to make a decision. The interviewer doesn't have the benefit
of seeing your nonverbal communication. To enhance your speaking
style, stand up during the conversation. The act of standing up
automatically projects confidence.

Keep
a copy of your resume and a list of talking points you want to
bring up during the interview. |

Phone
interview etiquette dictates that you clear the room, and if
you have a nosy household clear the house, to eliminate
distractions. |

Record
yourself answering interview questions and take note of your vocal
fillers...use of "huh" "um"...and do what
you can to eliminate those unprofessional distractions from
your communication. |
