Many job seekers wonder whether the cover letter is obsolete and whether it's a smart move to send the resume without one. Airing on the side of "the less I have to invest, the better," most candidates choose to submit the resume as a standalone.

A significant draw back to this approach is that the cover letter serves as an another opportunity to sell yourself. In today's sluggish job market, it is in your best interest to demonstrate your value at every turn, because if you are choosing to cut corners, chances are your competition isn't, and in the end you will get overlooked for positions you qualify for. There is nothing more frustrating than getting the cold shoulder for positions that you can do with your hands tied behind your back.

Think about it: there aren't too many things you have control over during the job search. Most of the time, it's the employer who has the upper hand. So anything you can do to get one step closer to your goal, you should do. There isn't a short cut to landing a position. Another way to look at the situation: say you are a hiring manager and you receive a resume with no cover letter as an introduction. Wouldn't you wonder what position the candidate is applying for? Whether the resume was meant for you or someone else? You will be left in the dark, and ultimately may choose to call candidates who properly introduced themselves. In essence, your train of thought will be similiar to hiring managers.
